Running Somewhere New in the Philippines

Health & fitness

There's a special kind of joy in lacing up your shoes in a place you've never been. No map, no plan, no pace to hit. You just open the door and go.

Early morning is the best time for it. The heat hasn't kicked in yet, the streets are quiet and you can pick a direction at random. Left, right, it doesn't matter.

The first few minutes are always the same. You're a little lost, a little curious and everything feels new. A rooster shouts from behind a fence. Someone sweeps a doorstep and smiles at you. A dog decides to follow you for a while and then loses interest.

When you don't know the route, you pay attention. You notice the smell of wood smoke and fresh bread, the colour of the little houses, the way the road bends towards the sea. At home it's the same loop on autopilot. Here every corner is a small surprise.

And you stop caring about your time. All that matters is the next turn.

Some of the best runs end up on narrow paths you would never find with a map. A dirt trail climbing through the jungle, with the sea flashing between the trees. A quiet stretch of sand with nothing on it but your own footprints.

Sure, you'll take wrong turns. Dead ends, muddy puddles, maybe a very confused goat. But getting lost is part of the fun. You turn around, or you keep going to see what's next.

If you're travelling slowly, running is a great way to get to know a place. You see it before it wakes up, at your own speed, and you finish with a cold drink and a big smile.

So next time you land somewhere new, pack your running shoes. Don't plan the route. Just go and see where the road takes you.
