Simple routines for the road
You do not need a gym to feel good while you travel. A few small habits are enough.
Move early or late
The middle of the day is hot and humid. Walk or run in the first hours after sunrise, or in the late afternoon. Drink water before you feel thirsty, and take a hat and sunscreen.
Walking
Walking is the best way to see a village. Wear comfortable sandals or shoes, watch for uneven pavements and open drains, and take it slowly in the heat. See Three Ways to Stay Fit in the Philippines for more ideas.
Swimming
Ask locals about currents and tides before you swim, swim where other people are, and wear a life jacket on boat trips if one is offered. Do not swim alone in open water.
Running
Streets can have stray dogs, motorbikes and no pavement. Choose a quiet road or a beach at low tide and stay aware of traffic. A full story is in Running Somewhere New in the Philippines.
Five minutes of stretching
Stretch your neck, shoulders, hips and calves after a long ride or walk, then breathe slowly for a minute. It is a good way to end the day, and it pairs well with Yoga in the Philippines and Sleep well.
Eat well
Fresh fruit, grilled fish, vegetables and rice are easy to find. Read How to Eat Healthy in the Philippines for a practical guide. This page is general travel advice and not medical advice. If you have a health condition, ask your doctor before you start something new.
